Fifteen minutes up the bay, Perast is a single street of baroque captains' houses with two islands offshore. Boats to Our Lady of the Rocks run continuously from the Perast waterfront for a few euros, or you can reach it directly from Kotor by boat. Combined with a swim, this fills a morning.
The switchback road above Kotor climbs 25 hairpins to the Lovćen massif, where the Njegoš mausoleum sits at 1,657 m above a view that covers the whole bay. Njeguši village on the way is where Montenegrin prosciutto and cheese come from, and stopping to eat there is half the point of the trip. Cetinje, the old royal capital, adds the palace, monastery and the national museums.
The largest lake in the Balkans, an hour inland, is a national park with pelicans, flooded monasteries and the small port of Virpazar. A boat hour on the lake pairs naturally with a tasting of Vranac and Krstač at a family winery in Crmnica — this is the closest real wine region to Kotor.

Ostrog is built into a vertical cliff face at 900 m and is the most visited pilgrimage site in Montenegro, for Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim visitors alike. It is 1 hour 45 from Kotor each way. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and the upper monastery is reached on foot from the lower car park.

Three and a half hours each way to the Tara canyon. It is done as a day trip and organised departures exist, but you are looking at 12–14 hours door to door with 3–4 hours on the water. If your schedule allows two days, split it: raft in the afternoon, sleep in Žabljak, hike the Black Lake the next morning.

For a first visit, Lovćen–Njeguši–Cetinje gives the widest mix of view, food and history in one day. If you only have half a day, take the bay boat trip to Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks.
