The Accursed Mountains — Montenegro's wildest hiking country
Plav sits beside its own glacial lake at the foot of the Prokletije range, the Accursed Mountains, where Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo meet. This is the least visited and most demanding hiking region in the country — high limestone walls, shepherd huts, and the Peaks of the Balkans long-distance trail that crosses all three borders.
Late June to early October. Snow blocks the high passes outside that window.
About 3 hours from Podgorica, 2 from Kolašin. A car or organised transfer is effectively required.

It is the most serious mountain terrain in Montenegro — high, remote and lightly marked in places. A local guide is strongly recommended for anything beyond the valley walks.
Border-crossing permits are required for the Albania and Kosovo sections and take a few weeks to arrange. Guides organise them as part of the trip.
