UNESCO Bay of Kotor — medieval walls, fjord views & Mediterranean flavours
Kotor sits at the head of Europe's southernmost fjord — a UNESCO-listed bay ringed by dramatic karst mountains. The walled Old Town dates back to the 12th century, packed with Venetian palaces, cathedrals and hidden piazzas. From Kotor you can hop on a fishing boat to Perast, hike the fortress walls at sunrise, or drive the switchbacks up to Lovćen National Park for panoramas across the whole bay. It's the natural base for exploring Montenegro's coast.
May–June and September–October are ideal: warm weather, clear water, and far fewer cruise-ship crowds than July/August.
Fly into Tivat (TIV, 8 km away) or Dubrovnik (DBV, 90 min drive across the Croatian border). Podgorica (TGD) is 90 min inland. Local guides can arrange airport transfers.
Book tours and activities in Kotor
Absolutely. The UNESCO bay, medieval Old Town, and hiking above the fjord make it one of the most photogenic destinations in Europe. Two days is enough for the highlights; a week lets you day-trip across Montenegro.
2–3 days for the Old Town and bay boat tours. Add extra days for Lovćen, Perast, Njeguši, and Cetinje day trips.
Kotor is smaller, cheaper, and less crowded — with a taller mountain backdrop and easier access to national parks. Dubrovnik wins for historical grandeur, Kotor for nature.
Yes — the bay is calm and clean, though beaches are pebbly. Better swimming spots are Perast, Prčanj, and the open coast at Budva 30 min south.
