Kotor sits on the east side of a deep bay ringed by 1,700 m mountains, so the sun disappears behind the ridge well before the official sunset time — in the town itself the light goes around an hour early. The three places that still get the full show are the San Giovanni fortress walls above the Old Town, the water in the middle of the bay, and the Perast waterfront across the water. Sunset is about 20:30 in June and July, 19:45 in late August, 18:50 in late September and 17:00 in December.
The path to San Giovanni fortress rises 260 m in 1,350 steps from the Old Town. Most people stop at the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, about two thirds up, which is where the classic photograph of the bay is taken. Start 90 minutes before sunset, bring water, and bring a phone torch — there is no lighting on the way down.
A late-afternoon boat leaves the marina and puts you in the middle of the bay as the light turns. Private charters take evening departures most readily; group bay tours normally finish earlier in the day.
Perast faces west across the water and keeps the light longer than Kotor does. It is 15 minutes away by car or taxi and the waterfront restaurants are built for exactly this hour.
