13 km of sand, kitesurfing & Montenegro's Ottoman south
Ulcinj is the southernmost town in Montenegro, a few kilometres from the Albanian border, and the only place on this coast with a genuinely long sandy beach. Velika Plaža runs 13 km towards the Bojana river, shallow and warm, with a dependable afternoon wind that has made it the region's kitesurfing centre. The walled old town on the headland was a pirate stronghold in the 16th century and later an Ottoman garrison.
June–September for the beach and wind. May and October are quiet and pleasant but the sea is cool.
About 1 hour 20 minutes from Budva, 1 hour from Podgorica, 25 minutes from Bar. Buses run along the coast several times a day.
