The Tara river has cut a canyon 1,300 m deep and 82 km long along the northern edge of Durmitor — the deepest in Europe and second deepest in the world after the Grand Canyon.
The river is protected as part of the UNESCO Durmitor site and its water is clean enough to drink straight from the current in the upper sections.
Built in 1940, blown up by its own engineer during the Second World War to slow the Italian advance, and rebuilt in 1946. There is a zip line across the canyon beside it (about €20) and several viewpoints and cafés on the rim.
Spring meltwater in April and May pushes the river to grade III–IV — genuinely wild. From June the level drops to grade II, which is safe for children from about ten and for non-swimmers, since life jackets are mandatory and provided.
Raft the classic 18 km section, or visit the bridge and Ćurevac viewpoint as part of a Durmitor day. Full-day trips from Kotor and Budva include transfer, rafting, equipment and lunch.
