Durmitor is a limestone massif in northern Montenegro with 48 peaks above 2,000 m, 18 glacial lakes and the Tara canyon along its northern edge. The national park was founded in 1952 and added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1980.
Žabljak, at 1,450 m, is the highest town in the Balkans and the base for everything in the park: hiking, rafting, jeep safaris and, in winter, skiing.
The park's symbol, 3 km from Žabljak and reachable on foot. A flat 3.5 km circuit takes about an hour and stays beside the water the whole way. In late summer the smaller of its two basins can dry out and the lakes separate.
Bobotov Kuk is a 6–8 hour return climb from Sedlo pass, with a scramble section near the summit. Easier alternatives are Ćurevac viewpoint over the Tara canyon, the Ice Cave at 2,180 m, and the Škrčka lakes valley. Snow can linger on the high routes into late June.
The northern boundary of the park is the Tara river, which carves the deepest canyon in Europe at 1,300 m. Rafting runs from Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje between mid-April and mid-October and is the single most popular activity in northern Montenegro.
Two to three days based in Žabljak covers Black Lake, one big hike and a rafting day. From the coast, full-day tours from Kotor or Budva combine the Tara bridge, Black Lake and a canyon viewpoint in one long drive.
