How to Book Tara River Rafting: The Complete 2026 Guide

BookNRoll Editorial · 2026-06-08 · 9 min read

Tara is Europe's deepest canyon and its most exciting river trip. Here's how to book it properly — without overpaying or ending up on a boring section.

The Tara river cuts through the deepest canyon in Europe — 1,300 metres of vertical limestone walls, glacier-blue water, and Class II–IV rapids. It's the top adrenaline experience in the Balkans. But most first-time bookers overpay, get put on the wrong section, or waste a day on a bus. Here's how to do it right.

Choose the right section

Two sections matter:

Pick your base

Šćepan Polje (the exit point) has the widest choice of operators. Coming from the coast, you'll be picked up before dawn either way — Kotor/Budva pickup is 3 hours each way, Podgorica 2.5 hours, Žabljak 45 minutes.

What a good tour costs

Anything under €50 from the coast is either using a beat-up minivan or a padded raft on the boring section. Anything over €130 for a half day is overcharging.

Best time to raft

May–June: highest water, biggest rapids, coldest swim.
July–August: warm swimming stops, calmer water, biggest crowds.
September: the sweet spot — moderate flow, empty rafts, autumn colour.
Rafting shuts down October–April.

What to bring

Wetsuit, life jacket, helmet, dry bag and paddle are always included. Some operators charge extra for photos (€15–25) — usually worth it.
