Skadar Lake Guide: Boat Tours, Wineries & Hidden Monasteries

BookNRoll Editorial · 2026-04-20 · 7 min read

Half the size of Luxembourg, 280+ bird species, five monasteries on tiny islands, and vineyards along the shore. Skadar Lake is criminally underrated.

Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans — half the size of Luxembourg, straddling the Albanian border, and home to 280+ bird species including pelicans. Add five clifftop monasteries on tiny islands, ancient Ottoman fortresses, and Montenegro's oldest wine region on the shore, and you've got the country's most underrated destination.

The main hub: Virpazar

A tiny village at the north end of the lake, 30 min from Podgorica. Base for 90% of boat tours, with a handful of konobas and guesthouses. No supermarket — bring what you need.

What to do on Skadar Lake

Boat tour (must-do)

3–4 hour trips depart Virpazar all day in season (€20–40). You'll cross vast water-lily fields (June–August), visit at least one island monastery (Beška, Moračnik, or Kom), stop for swimming in an isolated cove, and watch pelicans if lucky.

Wine tasting

Crmnica valley on the south shore is Montenegro's oldest wine region. Local grape Vranac produces deep, spicy reds. Family wineries like Mašanović and Sjekloća offer tastings + food for €15–25. Combine with a boat tour for a full day.

Island monasteries

Beška (2 churches, 14th century), Kom (frescoed interior), Moračnik (romantic ruin), Starčevo (isolated hermitage). Only Beška and Kom are usually included in standard tours; others need a private boat.

Rijeka Crnojevića viewpoint

The famous horseshoe river bend, 40 min drive from Virpazar. Featured on every Montenegro postcard. Cafe at the viewpoint. Best photo light: 8–10 am.

Birdwatching

Skadar hosts one of Europe's last Dalmatian pelican colonies (best May–July). 280+ species total. Specialised bird-watching tours available with binoculars & guide for €40–60.

Kayaking

Half-day guided kayak tours from Virpazar into the wetlands — quieter than boat trips, more wildlife. €30–45 including gear.

Best time to visit

May–June: water lilies bloom, pelicans nesting, wildflowers on shore. Peak experience.
September–October: wine harvest, warm water, empty tours.
July–August: hot (35 °C+), boats still run but wildlife less active.
November–March: quiet, wintering birds, most tour operators closed.

How to get there

Virpazar is 30 min from Podgorica, 90 min from Kotor/Budva by car. The Podgorica → Bar train stops in Virpazar (worth doing for the Mala Rijeka viaduct scenery). Most Skadar day tours from the coast include return transfer.

Where to eat

Try local Skadar carp (šaran) grilled or stuffed with prunes. Konoba Badanj in Virpazar is a local favourite. Vranjina restaurant on the north shore has the best lake views.
