Canyoning in Montenegro: 5 Best Canyons & What to Expect

BookNRoll Editorial · 2026-04-12 · 6 min read

Nevidio is the most famous canyon in the Balkans — and one of four world-class canyoning spots in Montenegro. Here's how to do it right.

Montenegro's karst geology has carved some of Europe's most dramatic canyons — narrow slots you descend by rappelling waterfalls, jumping into pools, and swimming crystal water. Here are the five worth booking.

1. Nevidio Canyon — the classic

Location: Durmitor · Difficulty: Hard · Season: July–early September

The most famous canyon in the Balkans. 2.7 km of narrow slot canyon with 15+ rappels, water jumps up to 6 m, and sections so tight you turn sideways. Full day (6–8 h in the canyon). Physically demanding — you need to be a confident swimmer and comfortable in cold water. Cost €80–120 with guide, gear, transfer and lunch.

2. Škurda Canyon — best for beginners

Location: just above Kotor · Difficulty: Easy-moderate · Season: May–October

Half-day intro canyoning right behind Kotor Old Town — no long transfer. Small rappels, gentle jumps, warm water in summer. Great first canyoning experience. €50–70 with guide and gear.

3. Medjurjecje Canyon

Location: near Kolašin · Difficulty: Moderate · Season: June–September

Emerald pools, moderate rappels (max 15 m), and a beautiful conifer setting. Less crowded than Nevidio, more scenic than Škurda. Full day trip from the coast (long drive).

4. Bukovica Canyon

Location: near Šavnik · Difficulty: Moderate · Season: June–September

Newer route with progressive difficulty — 20+ obstacles including 25 m rappel finale. Popular with intermediate canyoneers looking for something beyond Škurda but easier than Nevidio.

5. Hrčavka Canyon

Location: Sutjeska National Park (Bosnia border) · Difficulty: Hard · Season: July–August

Multi-day expedition-style canyoning for experienced groups. Not sold as a standard tour — arrange through specialist mountain guides. For serious canyoneers only.

What's included in a canyoning tour

What to bring

Swimsuit, sturdy old sneakers (canyon shoes provided by some operators), quick-dry towel, snacks, cash for tip. Leave everything electronic in the van — even waterproof phones get destroyed.

Safety essentials

Check the guide is certified by the Association of Canyoning Instructors (ACI) or equivalent. Water levels change rapidly after summer storms — a good guide will cancel and reschedule if conditions are wrong. Never book with an operator who won't show licensing.
