Dubrovnik's Old Town takes a morning. Its real advantage is position: Bosnia, Montenegro and a string of islands are all within a comfortable day. Here are seven trips ranked by how often travellers tell us they were worth it.

Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks and Kotor Old Town in one loop. Bring a passport; the border can add an hour in July and August. Leave by 7 am.

Koločep, Lopud and Šipan — three car-free islands, swimming stops and lunch on board. The easiest day out there is, and the best in a heatwave.

Europe's second-longest defensive wall, oyster beds you can eat straight from the sea, and the Dingač and Postup wine roads. Good for a driver-guide day.

Watermills, silk embroidery, olive oil and family-run konobas, half an hour from the cruise crowds. The gentlest trip on this list.

Not strictly a day trip, but the best three hours in Dubrovnik: paddle under the walls, stop at Betina cave beach, finish at sunset.

Only for travellers who want the Montenegrin coast rather than the bay. Long in a day — better as an overnight.
