Njeguši is a stone village at 900 m on the Lovćen plateau, the ancestral home of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty that ruled Montenegro for more than two centuries.
It is best known today for njeguški pršut — prosciutto smoked over beech and dried in the mountain wind — and for the cow's-milk cheese matured in oil that accompanies it.
Njeguši sits where cold mountain air meets sea air rising from the bay. The combination of smoke, wind and altitude creates the curing conditions that cannot be reproduced on the coast — the reason the name is protected and the reason producers stay in a village of a few hundred people.
The old road from Kotor climbs 900 m in 25 numbered turns, with the whole bay opening up behind you. Most Lovćen tours drive up this way and return via Budva, which is the better direction for photographs.
