Rafting or canyoning in Montenegro — which should I book?

Book Tara rafting if you want scenery, a long relaxed day and something the whole family can do: grade II summer water, minimum age 10, from €55 at the camps or €90 with transfer from the coast, season mid-April to mid-October. Book Nevidio canyoning if you want the harder, colder, more physical experience: jumps, slides and rappels through a 2.7 km canyon, moderate fitness and swimming ability required, minimum age usually 14, €80–€100, and a season of only July to early September because water levels must drop first. A licensed canyoning guide is legally required in Nevidio; rafting guides must hold a federation licence.

Both are in the north, 2.5–3 hours from the coast, and both are sold as full-day trips with transfer from Kotor, Budva and Tivat.

If you have time for only one and it is July or August, canyoning is the rarer experience — Nevidio is open barely eight weeks a year.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nevidio canyoning hard?

It is moderately demanding: 2.7 km of cold water with jumps up to 4 m, slides and rappels, taking 4–6 hours inside the canyon. You need to swim and be reasonably fit, but no technical experience is required.

Which is better value, rafting or canyoning?

Rafting for a first adventure and for families. Canyoning if you have done rafting before and want something rarer and more physical.
